Friend’s Drug Use

Dear Jasmine,

I have a friend who does drugs sometimes. I have been friends with her for almost 10 years and it hurts me to see her doing drugs. I haven’t really said anything to her because I don’t want her to think I am attacking her or telling her what to do.

But I think it is getting pretty bad that this drug use has carried on from her teenage years to her adult life. I think it may be even affecting her work situation because she is constantly changing jobs. I just want to help her and I am not sure how to go about doing so.

Dear Janice,

It is important for your friend to get some help so she can get her life back on track. It seems like her drug use has taken a toll on her life and she is digging herself into a deeper hole as she continues this behavior.

I would either suggestion you talk to her on your own or have an intervention with her. I would try talking to her first before I tried the latter because maybe you are able to help get through to her.

Let her know that you value her friendship with you and you are concern with her drug use because of the way it is affecting her life. Let her know you will be there for her to help her through it if she needs it, because that may be exactly what she needs during this time. She may need all the support she can get.

She should attend meetings that may give her help and support in stopping her addiction. If you have the time, it may even be helpful if you could attend a meeting with her and get her started on the right foot. Even if she doesn’t stop right away, letting her know she has a problem and trying to help is the first step of many in helping her stop her addiction.

There meetings may have suggestions for her on how to stop her drug use and also to find alternative outlets for her to seek. Hopefully you can show her how much drug use has affected her life in a negative way and get her started on the road to recovery
Always here,
Jasmine
