In most cases, I would say it is not a good idea. Some people are able to separate out their emotions when having sexual contact, while others are not able to stay away from the emotional part of it. I think it is very rare to maintain a healthy platonic relationship while having sex but it could be possible. However, I think the chances of it ruining the friendship is greater and that is a risk you and your best friend going to have to consider.
