Backup for Best Friend

Dear Jasmine,

Lately my best friend has been acting really strange. She just got a boyfriend and has been spending all her time with him. We just started college and we use to hang out everyday.

Now I barely get to see her at all because she hangs out with her boyfriend all the time. I feel pretty lonely at times and I feel like she only hangs out with me now because her boyfriend is busy.

Even my dorm mate made a comment about how she never sees my best friend anymore when she use to come over all the time before. Most people make comments that some girls get boyfriends and just ditch their friends but expect their friends to still be around when they break up with their boyfriends.

I don’t want to just be someone waiting around for my best friend to break up with her boyfriend, I want to spend time with her even though she has a boyfriend.

Dear Teresa,

It sounds like it is time for you to sit down with your best friend and tell her how you have been feeling lately. Often times, people may get so caught up in a new relationship that they neglect their friends without really knowing. That is no excuse but it may be the case.

Let her know you are happy that she has found someone she really likes but that you miss spending time with her. It is not like you want to spend every waking moment with her but you do want to be able to spend some time with her and just hang out like you use to.

You can even suggest that you could hang out with her boyfriend too so you can get to know her boyfriend and spend more time with her. See how she responds to the whole situation because you cast her off to the group of people that forget their friends until they break up.

Give your friend a chance to step up to the plate and see what she does.

Always here,
Jasmine
