Allergic Reaction

Dear Jasmine,

I have recently started dating this girl for a couple of months now. Everything seems to be going fairly well, as we get along great and seem to work out our problems. When we first started dating, I did not know she had pets, since we mostly met somewhere to go out. Recently I picked her up at her apartment and found out she has many dogs and cats, which gave me an allergic reaction soon after I was there.

I have encountered this problems throughout the years, whether it be at a friends house or whomever, and never really had to deal with it since, I just stop going over to their homes, etc. However, now that I am dating this girl, it seems almost impossible that I will never go over to her apartment.

She has suggested I take medication or get shots, and even though I know of this since it has been suggested to me before, I really am not interested in doing it. This has caused a huge problem between us and I am not sure how to deal with it.

Thanks,
Jeff M.

Dear Jeff,

I think if you are serious with this girl, you should consider the long run because chances are, she probably does not want to get give away her pets or place them somewhere else. Then if you ever decide one day to move in with her, that would be another problem on your hands. Since you are against taking medication or shots, there is only a few ways to go about this if you guys want to work through it.

If you see a future with this girl, you two need to come to a compromise. I think for the time being you should keep dating her for the time being to see how serious it gets before either of you make any drastic changes you may not be comfortable with. You should minimize yourself from going over to her apartment and make arrangements to meet elsewhere to avoid getting any allergric reactions. Then if your relationship gets serious, you and your girlfriend wil need to consider your options, which are you taking the medication/shots, or she should consider placing her pets with her family/friends. Tough choices for both of you, but sometimes you got to make them.

Always here,
Jasmine
